The Rich Tapestry of Espadrilles: From Ancient Roots to Modern Runways
THE ORIGINS:
Espadrilles as we know them, trace their roots back hundreds of years, taking us to the early 14th century, originating in the Mediterranean region of Spain, specifically the Basque Country and Catalonia, and the historical Occitania region of southern France.
Initially worn by peasants and mountain dwellers, they are also associated with the dancers of Sardana - a traditional Catalan dance - who tie them with ribbons around the ankles.
The name “espadrille” comes from Catalan "espardenya”, referring to esparto grass, traditionally used to craft ropes and baskets. The espadrille's distinctive braided esparto grass rope sole became its signature feature.

ESPADRILLES STEP INTO LUXURY FASHION:
By the 19th century their popularity surpassed Spanish and French frontiers, first to the rest of Europe, followed by the warm climate of South America, and in the 20th century they transitioned from a purely utilitarian towards effortless summer chic footwear.
In the 40s, thanks to the silver screen, in particular Rita Hayworth and Lauren Bacall, the popularity of espadrilles skyrocketed.
It was Yves Saint Laurent in the 50s, who played a pivotal role in elevating the once humble espadrilles to luxury status, introducing them to the catwalks of Paris, conquering the hearts of Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin or Jackie Kennedy to name a few. You may have also seen pictures of Salvator Dalí or Pablo Picasso, among others, wearing their beloved espadrilles.

The 70s are known and loved for many things and events, including the wedge espadrilles gaining their iconic status, once again, thanks to Yves Saint Laurent who teamed up with Castañer to create his hugely successful wedge heel espadrilles. It was the perfect fit for the eclectic boho and hippie fashion era.

CRAFTING THE PERFECT ESPADRILLE:
The production process of espadrilles remains true to its artisanal heritage, combining complex traditional techniques with modern refinements.
The sole is crafted from a variety of natural fibers, including jute, first dyed, then intertwined and braided to create the rope, manually placed to molds to form the shape, then stitched to keep the shape of the foundation of the sole, rubbered for additional comfort and longevity, and finally vulcanized with heat pressure.
The upper part (canvas, linen, crochet, leather, etc.), is then stitched, in many cases still by hand, to the sole. Depending on the design, the upper material is embellished before or after with anything from eyelets to studs, embroidery, crystals, pompoms, fringes, tassels, logo appliqués, you name it, or finished with laces.
The traditional unisex designs that have stood the test of time, evolved to include slides, mules, wedges and platform sandals, and have become fashion essentials, providing a cool, effortless and stylish solution for warm-weather occasions.
