Some call them flats, we would beg to differ. Others call them low, but when it comes to elevation (and beyond), we always see the glass half full.

Word of the Day: BITTEN Heels

Our very own addition to the fashion vocabulary.

Barely there, bite-sized heels, up to 2.5 cm in height. That "lite bite" of elevation your OOTD may need.

Prime examples include Prada's nearly sold-out slingback pumps, featuring a fifties-inspired 2.5 cm heel, and Valentino's Rockstud Wispy Mules, boasting an oval-shaped 2 cm heel—a bitten lacquered heel also adorning The Bold Edition's VLogo calfskin slingback ballerinas.

"Let's grab a bite" may just have taken on a whole new meaning.

Now that the Definitive Guide To Heel Heights is completed, this is how we categorize heel heights at Lozuri:

*We'll focus solely on measurement, steering clear of subjective areas such style-versus-comfort balances, or personal significance of elevation, practicality, daily vs. special occasions, or formal vs. casual. That’s all completely up to you. What's extreme or dramatic for some may be modest or simply not enough for others, and we fully respect that. We love that you love what you love. You know what brings you joy, and your attitude may hinge on factors beyond heel height.

  • FLATS: up to 1 cm / 0.4 in
  • BITTEN: 1 - 2.5 cm / 0.4 - 1 in
  • KITTEN: 2.5 - 5 cm / 1 - 2 in
  • RISEN (middle): 5 - 7.5 cm / 2 - 3 in
  • LIFTED (high): 7.5 - 12 cm / 3 - 4.7 in
  • SMITTEN (ultra high): +12 cm / 4.7 in

Originating in the fifties, emerging as a fashionable option for young teenage girls (hence the name), with Audrey Hepburn among their most notable early adopters both on and off screen, you may consider the KITTEN heels another delightful addition to your summer shoe collection.

Experiencing several revivals since the 50s and 60s, or since the mid-20th century if you prefer, they're back again, stronger than ever, and we predict this latest comeback and celebration of the kitten heel will endure.

Considering the time of year, we'd recommend opting for mules or slingbacks. The options are nearly endless, and we adore them all. Here are a few of our top picks:

Prefer a stiletto heel? Check out Sant Laurent's Oxalis slingback pumps—semi-sheer body, glossy pointed toe cap, with a 3 cm heel. And make sure you don’t leave without "trying" Jacquemus' Regalo Circle Square mules, featuring mismatched buckle accents and a gold-plated 4 cm heel.

If a block heel is more your style, Gianvito Rossi's buckle-strap, 4.5 cm-high Venezia mules, or Roger Vivier's Très Vivier mules with the iconic crystal buckle might be right up your alley.

Seeking sculptural heels or intricate detailing? Give Loewe's Toy with its signature 4.5 cm heel a try, or opt for Alexander McQueen's satin mules with an architectural, swirl-like front and a 4 cm heel.

If BITTEN OR KITTEN? didn’t solve your new summer shoes dilemma, stay tuned for the next part of the series, LIFTED OR SMITTEN?

*We’ll be taking the lift to the roof top, where both you and everyone blessed by your presence will be smitten by the view.
